Iranian writer Arbab Shirani dies

The veteran Iranian writer, researcher and translator, Saeed Arbab Shirani has passed away after a two-year battle with cancer in the United States.

“Arbab Shirani suffered from cancer and chemotherapy was not very effective,” Arbab Shirani's friend told Mehr News Agency.

A commemorative collection of biographical and literary articles will be published in Iran to pay tribute to the late scholar,” writer and translator Reza Nilipour said, adding that the edition will cover Arbab Shirani's life and works focusing on comparative literature.

Arbab Shirani was born in the Iranian city of Isfahan in 1937 and got his BA in English language and Literature from the University of Tehran.

He continued his studies in the US and got his PhD in Comparative Literature from Princeton University.

Dr. Arbab Shirani is best known for translating Rene Welleck's History of Modern Criticism which won him Iran's Book of the Year Award in translation.

The prominent Iranian scholar was buried in the US, where most of his family members live.
