A friendly football match between Iran and Venezuela has been called off following strong opposition by Iran's newly appointed manager Carlos Queiroz.

“The match, which was scheduled to kick off in Tehran's Azadi Stadium on June 7, has been called off since no contract had been signed between the two sides,” Mehr news agency quoted the director of the International Committee of Iran's Football Federation, Abbas Torabian, as saying on Monday.

The announcement comes as Iran and Venezuela football officials had initially agreed to the sports event.

“Since the Iranian Premier League takes longer time than originally planned and the match was slated immediately after the competitions, Queiroz preferred to cancel the match,” Torabian said.

He noted that footballers need rest after a long and exhausting season to freshen up before the 2014 World Cup qualification games.

Queiroz' men will play against Madagascar in a friendly match at Azadi Stadium on July 17.
