Kirkland escaped from a medium-security prison in Shirley on Monday morning.
One man has been shot dead and three others wounded after a shootout between a fugitive prisoner and police officers in the US state of Massachusetts.

Last Monday, 24 year-old Tamik Kirkland escaped from a medium-security prison in Shirley, Mass. where he was serving 2 to 4 years on weapons charges, Reuters reported.

The shootout began after Kirkland shot one man to death and wounded another on Saturday noon at a beauty salon in Springfield.

Kirkland then escaped from the salon and hid in a house a few blocks away. A bit later a silver car backed up the house and Kirkland climbed into the trunk.

After being chased by police, he jumped out of the trunk and shot two officers, injuring them slightly, Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney said.

Kirkland was severely injured after the officers shot back at him. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

His goal was allegedly to avenge the shooting of his mother, who was wounded in the leg.

After the shooting was over, a six-month-old baby was found in the car. The driver of the car and her baby were not injured.

Kirkland, who was last arrested in 2008, has a history of gun and drug charges, authorities say.

According to the Boston Globe, Kirkland is also known as "Matik" and identifies himself on a website as a member of the Springfield-based rap group, The Mafioso Mobsters, and as the founder of Ahnesty Records, a recording label.
