Acupuncture might reduce the frequency of hot flashes that recurrently appear due to the effects of the hormones used for the treatment of prostate cancer.

A small study of 14 men receiving hormone therapy for prostate cancer showed that acupuncture may reduce the hot flashes that occur in as many as 60 percent of patients.

Hormone therapy in prostate cancer aims at lowering the serum levels of male hormone testosterone, needed for the tumor to grow and spread. The treatment, however, is associated with severe side effects including hot flashes, anxiety and palpitation.

"Our study shows that physicians and patients have an additional treatment for something that affects many men undergoing prostate cancer treatment and actually has long-term benefits, as opposed to more side effects," said study author Hani Ashamalla.

The study, however, failed to show whether the reduction of hot flashes caused by acupuncture was because of the placebo effect or the symptoms which simply subsided on their own.

"Clearly these men described getting better, and it happened over a very short period of time," Cornell University researchers wrote in the International journal of radiation oncology, biology, physics.
"The symptoms don't (normally) get better by that much that quickly."

Ashamalla urged men experiencing hot flashes due to hormone therapy to consult with their doctors if they are willing to start acupuncture treatment.
