Iraqi firefighters douse a burning car in the northern city of Kirkuk on April 13.
At least one civilian has been killed and 16 others, including three children, have been injured in a car bomb blast in the northeast of the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad, police say.

Colonel Kamel Ahmad said on Wednesday that the explosion happened near Sulaimaniya restaurant in Raas al-Damiz region in southern Kirkuk.

"One man was killed and 16 others, including three children, two women and three policemen, wounded," the senior police officer told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

"The four wounded persons are in critical condition," he added.

Also on Wednesday, a US military base in southern Iraq was targeted by a mortar attack.

Meanwhile, police arrested members of an armed group who attempted to target people in Baghdad on Wednesday.

"The unknown group based in Baghdad and is active in all provinces and investigation underway," said spokesman of the Baghdad Operations Command Qassem Atta.

The car bomb explosions and roadside bombs claim the lives of Iraqi people, including women and children, and injure them almost on a daily basis.

This is while there are about 47,000 US troops in the war-torn country to provide security for the people.
