Director Ingmar Bergman will be one of the figures selected to adorn new Swedish banknotes.
Sweden's Central Back, Sveriges Riksbank has announced that the Nordic country will picture its famous cultural and artistic figures on its new 100-krona banknotes.

Swedish Hollywood actress Greta Garbo, Director Ingmar Bergman, writer Astrid Lindgren, troubadour Evert Taube, opera diva Birgit Nilsson and former United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjoeld have been selected to adorn the country's new notes.

“The new motifs reflect Sweden's cultural heritage and different parts of our country in a positive and representative way,” Johan Gernandt and Leif Pagrotsky, chairman and vice chairman of the bank's General Council said in a statement. “Of course, achieving an equal balance between women and men has also been important.”

According to Bloomberg, the bank will organize a design competition for the notes and will announced its final decision by the start of 2012 “if no intellectual property law problems arise.” The new notes will be issued in 2014 or 2015.

Current Swedish banknotes feature author Selma Lagerloef, singer Jenny Lind, botanist Carl Linnaeus, and Kings Karl XI and Gustav Vasa.
