Iran has clinched three victories on the first day of the freestyle wrestling World Cup to move closer to a final match against Russia.
The Iranian squad beat Azerbaijan, Hungary (reinforced by Kazakhstan) and Georgia in its first three matches.
A forth match against Cuba, scheduled for Saturday evening, was postponed until Sunday despite protests by the Iranian team.
Iran beat Azerbaijan 4-3 in its first match held on Saturday in Makhachkala, the capital of the Republic of Dagestan. On the same day, the Iranian squad thrashed Hungary (reinforced by Kazakhstan) 6-1 and defeated Georgia 5-2 to top Group B.
Russia made it to the final match after three wins over Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan. Iran will make it to the final match should it defeat Cuba.
Iran manager Gholam Mohammadi protested the decision by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) to postpone Iran's match with Cuba, saying it was made under “Russian influence.”
In February, Iran's Greco-Roman wrestlers overpowered Olympic champion Russia to claim the world champion title for the second consecutive year.
