Conservative leader David Cameron meets Queen Elizabeth II.
Conservative leader David Cameron has become the new British prime minister and will lead a coalition government that includes the Liberal Democrats.

Cameron has formally accepted the Queen's request to form a government, BBC reported on Tuesday.

In last week's general election, the Conservatives won a plurality of the seats in Parliament, while Labour and the Liberal Democrats came in second and third respectively.

Since none of the parties received a majority of the vote, the Conservatives and Labour both sought to convince the Liberal Democrats to join a coalition government.

After five days of intense negotiations, the Liberal Democrats indicated that they were ready to join the Conservatives, prompting Labour leader Gordon Brown to resign as prime minister.
