Gordon Brown has announced his resignation as British prime minister and said Conservative leader David Cameron would be taking over.

On Tuesday Brown said, "I have informed the Queen's private secretary that it's my intention to tender my resignation to the Queen," Reuters reported on Tuesday evening.

In last week's elections, the Conservatives won a plurality of the seats in Parliament, while Labour and the Liberal Democrats came in second and third respectively.

Brown made the announcement after the Conservatives made a power-sharing agreement with the Liberal Democrats that will allow the formation of Britain's next government, ending 13 years of rule by the center-left Labour Party.
